Remember - smooshed faced pooches are very very prone to heat stroke.
Here are some tips that can help you to avoid the tragedy on a hot day:
Make sure the shade for your pet is available all day long. If there is a dog house in your yard, make sure it is cooler inside than outside. Trees are natural source of shade and coolness, so it is good to place your dog’s house under one.
If your pet is left indoors, is air conditioning available? Will the house stay cool through the heat of the day? Basement access will provide a naturally cool area to keep your pet comfortable.
Is fresh cool water available for your pet all the time? Can your pet spill the water source? Consider installing the automatic pet waterer.
Do not go for long walks on hot days. Limit playtime. Plan exercise and outdoor activities in the relative coolness of morning and evening time.
Carry water with you when walking your dog. Watch your pet carefully for indications that he is over-heating, such as heavy panting, loss of energy, and any obvious weakness or stumbling. If your pet begins to show signs of heat suffering, stop in a shady spot and give him some water. If symptoms don’t subside, take him directly home and seek veterinary care.
Never, never, never leave your pet unattended in a parked car. Even if you park in the shade and leave the windows open slightly, the internal temperature of your car can heat up and put your dog in fatal danger within just a few minutes. If you see a pet locked in a car, please call local animal authorities immediately, you may save a life!
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog displays these signs:
- pants a lot even when the temperature is cool.- appears tired and lethargic.
- dog’s gums are suddenly bright red.
